ELLEN HIRZY

Ellen Hirzy is an independent editor and writer for museums, museum organizations, and other nonprofits. Her work in the museum field focuses on the continuing dialogue about museums’ evolving public role, governance, institutional values, and professional practices. Her strengths include working with groups or as part of large-scale projects to assimilate ideas, communicate them convincingly, and develop cohesive publications about issues and practices.

Projects include annual reports, books, brochures, catalogues, conference and symposium summaries, development and fund-raising materials, education and exhibition materials, periodicals, planning documents, policy and position papers, and professional handbooks. Recent clients have included the American Association of Museums, American Association of Museum Volunteers, Americans for the Arts, BoardSource, Capital Children’s Museum, Chorus America, and Pew Charitable Trusts.

Ellen is the principal writer of two major reports that have shaped thinking about museums in America: Museums for a New Century (1984) and Excellence and Equity: Education and the Public Dimension of Museums (1992), both published by the American Association of Museums. She is the lead contributor to Mastering Civic Engagement: A Challenge to Museums (AAM, 2002) and coauthor of New Forums: Art Museums and Communities (Pew Charitable Trusts and AAM, 2004).

With 35 years of experience in her field, Ellen was editor of Museum News and director of publications at the American Association of Museums for 11 years. She established her editing and writing business in 1986.
