BETH TUTTLE

As managing director of METStrategies, LLC, Beth Tuttle works with cultural, educational and philanthropic organizations in times of major change, transformation or growth to solve strategic, brand and communications challenges.  Her practice focuses on facilitating the strategic thinking and the conversations that matter among the people who are critical to transformation efforts – leaders, staff, boards, volunteers, other stakeholders, and audiences. She believes that a powerfully articulated vision; careful attention to selecting and aligning people, programs and operations to that vision; and shared, multi-level leadership are important keys to every organization's success.

Beth’s more than 25 years of national non-profit and corporate management experience combines skills in organizational development and strategic planning, fundraising, communications, marketing and advertising, with a deep understanding of the culture, language and practices of museums and other social benefit organizations.  She is recognized as a gifted facilitator of group dynamics, a creative thinker, and organizational and brand strategist, whose work has focused on envisioning, launching and repositioning organizations as well as innovation initiatives leading to new products and businesses.

Before launching METStrategies in 2008, Beth served as Deputy Director, Chief of External Relations and Planning for the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and as Senior Vice President for Communications for The Freedom Forum and Newseum, where she served on the master planning team and was responsible for orchestrating an international launch for the Newseum in 1997. She was a senior account manager at leading New York and Washington-based advertising agencies where she honed her skills in brand architecture, market research, and creative management. Beth combines her communications expertise with a deep understanding of fundraising and philanthropy, having also held key positions in non-profit advocacy and in the foundation sector for more than a decade.

Beth's cultural and philanthropic work has spanned from  brand development for the new Crocker Art Museum and the National Museum of American Jewish History to visioning and strategic planning for the Contemporary Museum/Baltimore, and from high-level meeting design, community engagement and facilitation for the National Academies of Science and The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to strategic philanthropy counsel for the TKF Foundation and the Hoffberger Foundation.

A graduate of Brown University, with a concentration in American Civilization, Beth is a frequent university guest lecturer and presenter at museum and industry conferences. She is a member of the Newseum National Advisory Committee and the American Association of Museums, and is a former trustee of the Cultural Alliance of Greater Washington. Beth is a Visiting Practitioner at the Georgetown University Center for Public and Nonprofit Leadership where she is collaborating with The Museum Group colleague Anne Bergeron on a research project exploring the characteristics of high-performing museums. Beth lives in Alexandria, VA where she is a master gardener serving the community through horticultural service, information and education.
